SIG Business
- Initial Tech Stack
- Issue - Scientific Computing SIG needs to focus on an initial software stack in the beginning that caters to the needs of the currently active membership.
- Solution - We determined that the best choice moving forward will be the Python data science and scientific computing stacks. Scientific Computing classes moving forward shall be Python-based, except in specific circumstances. Furthermore, we shall also promote CAD classes, such as KiCAD and Solidworks. We will work with Electronics and various CAD teachers to ensure that the software needs of their teachers are met.
- Team-Building Projects
- Issue - Only certain members of SciComp SIG have experience with operating in a software development team.
- Solution - We will come up with a moderately-difficult python-based software project to build team cohesion and teach software development processes. The current opinion of the chair is that this project should be a new DMS calendar.
- Curriculum Development
- Issue - Scientific Computing SIG members have a wide variety of interests, so we curriculum that is general enough to attract multiple students and yet specific enough to be useful to those students.
- Solution - TBD
- Computer Lab
- Issue - Scientific Computing SIG will need a well-developed computer lab to begin its classes and allow its members to practice what they learn. We will also assist in maintaining the computer lab for other committees and SIGs. Sufficient monitors/peripherals, HDMI splitters, a shorter desk for the teacher, and so forth are necessary to conduct our classes. The desks also need to be reoriented away from the walls so that students are facing the teacher. Smart cable management will be necessary.
- Solution - Set up a computer lab meeting and work day for one weekend form now. In the meantime, ensure that we have the sufficient materials to start the workday from a sprint.
