I, Max Locke, am submitting my Statement of Intent to run for the Board of Directors.

I am submitting this Statement of Intent to request your consideration for a position on the 2025 DMS Board Of Directors.

When I first joined DMS, I scratched my head and asked myself, "how in the heck does an volunteer-led organization of this size run itself?"  So I got involved.  While there have been frustrating times… along with the "making," working on the operations of this organization has been fascinating.

Qualifications:

Serving as the 2024-2025 DMS Secretary.  This role has given me considerable exposure to the inter-workings of DMS administration;

Active participant within numerous DMS Committees; and

My day job: As a Management Consultant, I have considerable experience with governance, marketing, operations, finance, etc. within a wide range of businesses.

The main thing I have learned is there is no shortage of absolutely great ideas for DMS.  However, this is a volunteer organization and as such, unless someone or a group of people owns that idea, it will likely be just talk.  My main focus on day one will be Volunteers - identifying them, motivating them, acknowledging them, supporting them, removing roadblocks, etc.  Can a single Board Member do that alone?, No.  But a great set of Board members and Officers sure can facilitate it.

2024-2025 has been a stressful financial year for DMS - reluctantly, a rate increase will go into effect in April.  However, with it will come the flexibility to focus on growing the membership and expanding the capabilities of DMS - so we can "make."  Member growth and capability growth will be a focus for me.

By the time a reader gets to this point in a Statement of Intent, their attention is waning.  If you have questions, reach out on Talk or Discord, find me in the halls, catch me in a committee meeting, let's chat…

Thanks for the time

  1. I’d like to also send my endorsement for Max! As secretary, I have seen Max keep the meetings on task when sometimes meetings can go sidelined and also not afraid to turn the business professional side on when rules or concerns are brought up, Max professionally can handle it while being the “bad guy”.

    Max is also often at the space during the week and weekends and I had the pleasure of shadowing him on a recent tour. He had so much knowledge of each committee I was amazed.

    I really like to see how Max attends many committee meetings, brings members concerns up to the board during working sessions from those meetings and also a fantastic communicator.

    He's also very patient, listens to detail and with his integrity and business experience I would love to see Max as a BOD!

  2. I am excited to see that Max is running for board.  As a board member, I had the opportunity to work with Max over the past year and appreciate his service as secretary.  He is level-headed and has the necessary business experience and integrity to lead the organization.  More importantly, Max understands the culture of a Makerspace.  Max's experience as secretary and working with committee chairs would be a great asset to DMS as a board member and I would love to see Max on the next board!

  3. I want to state my support of Max as a board member.  His calm and rational demeanor and his knowledge of DMS would be great assets to the DMS board.  I have personally witnessed him successfully mediate the Committee Chair Meetings and Board Meetings, skillfully handling multiple big personalities and keeping to the schedule and agendas.  Max has always treated everyone at DMS with respect and I believe he would be an excellent board member.

  4. In my last year working with Max as secretary, I've seen him make a tremendous positive impact on the space. He keeps people organized and on-track, he bridges communication gaps, and he does it all while listening earnestly to feedback from our members and volunteers. I don't know if we can trust his business acumen with him going to McCombs but nobody's perfect. He'd make an excellent member of the board.

  5. I endorse Max! He has done a fantastic job as secretary and has shown true dedication to our organization! He will make a fantastic board member.

  6. Max's fantastic organization skills combined with his activity at the space is a great mix for a awesome board member.  His judgement is tempered and he is willing to make unpopular decisions for the betterment of the space.  I am excited to see Max run and look forward to seeing him as a board member.  We can work on his pizza toppings selections in the upcoming months.
